Traveling Home for the Holidays With Dentures: Your Guide to Safe, Comfortable Denture Care

Every December, I see an increase in patients preparing to travel — whether they’re flying out of Ottawa, driving from Perth to visit family, or heading down south for a winter getaway. And one thing I always remind everyone is this: traveling with dentures doesn’t have to be stressful — as long as you’re prepared.

I’ve helped countless patients across Ottawa, Perth, Carleton Place, Kanata, Stittsville, Smiths Falls, and Lanark County travel comfortably with their dentures. Whether you’re new to dentures or have worn them for years, a trip away from home can bring unexpected challenges like dryness, slipping, cleaning issues, sore spots, or difficulty eating in unfamiliar environments.

So, in this blog, I’m sharing everything I normally tell my patients before they travel — simple steps you can take to protect your dentures, prevent discomfort, and enjoy your holidays with confidence.

Wherever you’re heading this season, I want to make sure your smile travels as comfortably as you do.

1. Schedule a Quick Check-Up Before You Travel

If you’re going to be away for a week, a month, or even several months, I always recommend booking a quick denture appointment before you leave.

Here’s why:

  • I can check your denture fit
  • I can adjust any small pressure spots
  • I can help prevent sores before they start
  • I can repair cracks or wear you may not have noticed
  • I can reinforce any weak areas in older dentures
  • I can provide advice based on your destination

Many of my patients from Ottawa and Perth avoid holiday discomfort simply by getting a check-up before they hit the road.

A 15–30 minute visit can save you days of discomfort while away from home.

2. Pack a Proper Denture Travel Kit

No matter how long your trip is, your denture care items need to be accessible at all times, especially if you’re flying.

Here’s what I always recommend packing:

  • Denture brush
  • Non-abrasive denture cleanser
  • Small soaking container
  • Denture cleaning tablets
  • A clean soft cloth or towel
  • Adhesive (if needed)
  • Pain-free moisturizing mouth rinse
  • A labeled denture case
  • Backup dentures (if you have them)

If you’re flying out of Ottawa International Airport, remember to keep your denture kit in your carry-on luggage.
If your checked bags are lost, you won’t be stuck without essential supplies.

3. Stay Ahead of Dry Mouth — It Gets Worse While Traveling

Traveling often increases dry mouth, whether you’re sitting in heated cars, airplanes, or hotels with dry air.
Dry mouth reduces denture suction and increases friction — meaning more irritation and slippage.

Here’s what I suggest:

  • Sip water frequently
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine during travel
  • Use an alcohol-free moisturizing mouth rinse
  • Bring sugar-free lozenges
  • Use a humidifier if staying somewhere dry
  • Avoid talking excessively if your mouth feels dry

Dry mouth is one of the biggest causes of discomfort for denture wearers during travel — but it’s one of the easiest issues to manage with preparation.

4. Be Cautious with Holiday Foods

I love seeing families gather around the dinner table, especially during the holidays. But certain foods can pose challenges for denture wearers — especially if they’re eating at places where they can’t control preparation.

On the road or with family, watch out for:

  • Hard nuts
  • Toffee and caramels
  • Crunchy crust breads
  • Peanut brittle
  • Very chewy meats
  • Sticky desserts
  • Popcorn kernels

These foods can:

  • Crack dentures
  • Loosen suction
  • Cause sore spots
  • Damage older acrylic

You can still enjoy your holiday favourites, just take smaller bites and chew gently.
And if you’re eating at restaurants in places like Ottawa, Kingston, or Toronto, choose softer options when possible.

5. Keep Your Dentures Moist — Especially Overnight

Dentures can dry out faster in hotel rooms, winter cabins, and heated vacation homes.

To protect them:

  • Never leave dentures on a counter or nightstand
  • Always soak them in room-temperature water or denture solution
  • Avoid hot water, which can warp acrylic
  • Use closed containers to prevent contamination

This is especially important in our cold Canadian winters, where dry indoor heating can quickly damage the denture surface.

6. Prepare for Emergencies Just in Case

While most denture trips go smoothly, things happen — dropped dentures, cracks, or lost appliances.
Here’s how to stay protected:

  • Carry a backup denture if you have one
  • Keep my contact details saved
  • Store broken pieces — don’t throw them out
  • Never use glue or DIY kits
  • If something breaks on a long trip, reach out for advice

In many cases, the damage can wait until you return home.
In other cases — especially for large cracks — I’ll help you decide what’s safe.

7. Stay Confident While Speaking and Eating Away from Home

Travelling means socializing more, eating in unfamiliar places, and sometimes speaking with new people.
This can feel intimidating if you’re adjusting to dentures.

Here are a few tips I give my patients:

For Speaking:

  • Practice speaking slowly
  • Swallow gently before talking to reseat dentures
  • Smile naturally when speaking — it stabilizes movement
  • If dentures click, pause and adjust your pace

For Eating:

  • Start meals with soft foods
  • Take smaller bites
  • Chew on both sides for balance
  • Avoid very hot or very cold items
  • Drink water between bites

You’ll find your confidence grows quickly — even more so when you’re prepared.

8. Consider Weather and Climate Changes

Many people in Perth and Ottawa head south in the winter, while others travel to colder areas to visit family.

Different climates can affect your comfort:

Cold destinations:

  • Increase dry mouth
  • Make oral tissues more sensitive
  • Reduce suction
  • Increase irritation

Warm destinations:

  • Increase swelling of oral tissues
  • Increase sweat and hydration needs
  • Change adhesive performance

Wherever you’re going, just be mindful of how your mouth feels as you settle into the climate.

9. Stick to Your Nightly Routine, Even While Away

It can be tempting to skip your nightly denture routine when you’re tired or busy visiting.
But travelling is when routine matters most.

Always:

  • Remove dentures at night
  • Soak them properly
  • Clean gums, tongue, and palate
  • Let tissues rest overnight

Many denture issues I see in January appointments come from December travel where routines were forgotten.

10. Don’t Ignore Discomfort While Away

If your dentures begin to:

  • Rub
  • Slip
  • Pinch
  • Create sores
  • Feel loose
  • Feel too tight

…don’t ignore it just because you’re away from home.

You can contact me for advice, and I’ll help you determine whether it’s safe to continue wearing them until you return — or whether you should stop using them temporarily.

My goal is to protect your long-term comfort and oral health, even while you’re travelling.

Why Traveling With Dentures Is Easier With Preparation

When my patients prepare ahead of time, they’re able to:

  • Eat their favourite holiday meals
  • Smile confidently in family photos
  • Travel without stress
  • Avoid sore spots and emergencies
  • Maintain comfort all trip long

Travelling with dentures can be completely enjoyable — and I’m here to help make sure it is.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re traveling from Ottawa, visiting family in Perth, flying out of the country, or enjoying a winter escape, your dentures should support your trip — not complicate it.

Your dentures are a part of your daily life.
They deserve the same care and attention you give any other important travel item — maybe even more.

I’m always here to help you travel comfortably with a smile you can trust.
